Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine located in Springfield, Illinois, announces an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished breast surgeon to serve as Chief of the Division of General Surgery.
The Chief of General Surgery will advance clinical quality, safety and operational efficiency while cultivating a collegial and multidisciplinary team-based culture to ensure a high-functioning division. The Chief will be responsible for the fiscal and operational responsibilities for the division and will foster collaborative relationships between SIU School of Medicine and its affiliated hospital organizations: Memorial Health System and HSHS St. John’s Hospital to further advance general surgery programs. The Chief of General Surgery will partner with the residency Program Director and support all division initiatives to ensure the program is within GME guidelines, which includes oversite of curriculum and performance evaluation.
The Chief of General Surgery will work to establish a highly recognized breast surgery program through collaborative efforts with SIU’s affiliated hospitals as well as by cultivating relationships with the community-based primary care physicians to develop a strong referral base. The Chief of General Surgery will provide strategic leadership in program development to enhance the Division of General Surgery’s existing clinical programs and identify opportunity for expansion within other surgical specialty areas. The Chief of General Surgery supports a culture of quality clinical care, education and scholarly activities and clinical research to promote the advancement of the general surgery division.
SIU School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery consists of nine specialized divisions with 60 full time faculty and 200 staff who perform over 10,000 surgeries annually in cardiothoracic, general surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, orthopaedic surgery, urology, and vascular surgery. The Division of General Surgery is comprised of 12 full time faculty, 19 residents and 1 fellow.
The successful candidate for the Chief, Division of General Surgery will be a respected breast surgeon with a track record of excellence in clinical care, teaching, and research within an academic surgical program. This position requires excellent leadership and communication skills. Current board certification in General Surgery and a practice focus in breast surgery are required as well as a faculty appointment of Associate Professor or higher.
